Review – Sophia Hotel, Cartagena, Colombia

Located within the walled city of Cartagena and across from the hustling Plaza de Aduana (Customs Plaza), you will find the Sophia Hotel.

As we entered the doors of the colonial-era building into the small, quaint and luxurious boutique hotel, we were welcomed by the kind and smiling hotel staff. The reception is located in a large open lobby which undoubtedly was the courtyard and/or living room of a beautiful private home centuries ago.

The hotel staff were clearly expecting our arrival. As we checked-in, our bags were immediately ushered to our room and awaited our arrival.

After check-in, we were escorted to our beautiful room which faced the Plaza de Aduana. The decoration was colonial and elegant while simultaneously offering a coziness only found in a home.

On the bed we found a tray with complimentary bottled water and local Colombian candy sitting on top of a leaf (a real leaf).

The Bathroom was located as you walked into the room. On the right side, the counter sink with wall-to-wall mirror and on the left side, passed the beautiful wood door, we found the shower and toilet.

The Sophia Hotel offered amazing bathroom amenity kits made of organic products and made in Colombia.

As we ventured through the hotel, we found the hotel roof bar along with the pool and the unbelievable, one-of-a-kind view of the old as well as the new city in the far distance.

We enjoyed our free welcome drink at the roof bar and soaked-in the views and sun before continuing our hotel and city exploration.

On the main floor and through an interior, open-air hallway, full of well-maintained plants and flowers, we found the hotel restaurant. The restaurant is open for only breakfast and dinner. The restaurants full-service bar ambiance is also a great location for a drink before heading into town or a night cap before closing the evening.

We enjoyed an amazing, freshly cooked breakfast which was included with our room rate.

The 15-room Sophia Hotel is a place full of inspiration, tranquility and offers a magical atmosphere. A must if you’re staying in Cartagena, Colombia. We will be back soon!
